Yes, blog is back. And this is what I just finished reading:
An Ordinary Man: An Autobiography by Paul Rusesabagina with Tom Zoellner
This book was much better than my expectations. I was also surprised by how often parallel could be drawn between Rwanda and current events in the US (mostly because I am more drawn to specificity than universality.) Rusesabagina provides both. He gives his perspective on behavior and attitudes unique to Rwandan culture and what he deems universal humanity. Also, he addresses the myth that attributes African conflict to tribal animosity, while European conflict is about power and national sovereignty. His perspective is intuitive and observational. I also responded to it because it is very matter-of-fact and personal, rather than trying to speak for the victims and bring the horror to the reader in graphic descriptive detail. These are things he saw, these are things he did, these are ways he felt, and these are thoughts he has.
It's not a long book, but if I were to recommend one chapter, it would be Chapter 4, which talks about RTLM Radio from the perspective of a regular listener.
